Just four months into 2019, Sanford Underground Research Facility (Sanford Lab) continues to evolve in the realms of safety, education, science and infrastructure. For an update on Sanford Lab progress and projects, join Executive Director Mike Headley at the next Deep Talks, Science for Everyone series on Tuesday, April 16, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead, S.D.

At this event, Headley will give an overview of Sanford Lab, including progress on the experiments housed on the 4850 Level and future projects.

“Sanford Lab is world-leading research facility and continues to grow. Our plans include construction of additional facilities for future science and expanding existing education and outreach programs,” Headley said. Headley will also highlight the impacts Sanford Lab has on the economy and education in South Dakota.

Advancements in Sanford Lab experiments, educational programming and facility infrastructure have an immense impact on both the State of South Dakota and the Midwest region. Through regional spending and job creation—both direct hires at Sanford Lab and jobs generated by large science projects on-site—Sanford Lab creates a ripple of impacts throughout the state. The facility’s K-12 outreach efforts reach more than 10,000 students across the region annually.

"Over the years, we’ve made some great strides at Sanford Lab—not the least of which was building an underground research facility for world-leading physics experiments,” said Headley. “The people of South Dakota are seeing an immense return on their investment in this facility. We are thrilled to be able to support the community and region that surrounds Sanford Lab.”

A member of the Sanford Lab team since 2008, Headley acknowledges that support from the state and regional community has contributed to the success of each undertaking at the facility. In recognition of this support, Sanford Lab makes every effort to keep the community well-informed about progress and projects onsite.

Deep Talks is held at the Visitor Center, 160 W. Main Street, in Lead. The event begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour that includes free beer (must be 21 and older to drink) and light snacks. Deep Talks is sponsored by Crow Peak Brewing Company of Spearfish, S.D. Please note this event takes place on a Tuesday, not a Thursday, due to scheduling conflicts at the Visitor Center.
