First PREMIER Bank continues commitment to inspire STEM workforce of tomorrow

First PREMIER Bank recently announced an increased commitment to the Davis-Bahcall Scholars Program totaling $100,000.

What sparks a lifelong passion for STEM?

For students in South Dakota, it might just be the Davis-Bahcall Scholar Program, a transformative opportunity to explore the cutting-edge of scientific research. Since 2009, the Davis-Bahcall Scholar Program has transformed the lives of almost 100 South Dakota students, launching many of them into exciting STEM careers. Now, thanks to First PREMIER Bank's increased support, this innovative program is further strengthened to continue empowering the next generation of STEM leaders.

First PREMIER Bank recently announced an increased commitment to the Davis-Bahcall Scholar Program, pledging $100,000 over the next five years. Beginning in 2026, this renewed funding—$20,000 annually—builds on their previous $75,000 contribution, reflecting the bank’s deepened dedication to advancing STEM education in the region.

“This program opens doors for young people to explore careers that shape our future,” said Dana Dykhouse, Chief Executive Officer of First PREMIER Bank. “We are honored to invest in the next generation of STEM leaders, knowing the far-reaching impact it has on students and South Dakota.

"For Madison Jilek, a 2014 Davis-Bahcall scholar from Spearfish High School, the program was truly life-changing. Today, she's completing her Ph.D. in chemical physics at the University of Colorado Boulder, specializing in nanocrystal photophysics. "I have benefited immensely from the connections I made during that summer in 2014," Jilek reflects. "I'm still in communication with some of the people I did Davis-Bahcall with, and with some of the professors and professionals that we met along the way."

The Davis-Bahcall Scholar Program, hosted by the Institute for Underground Science at SURF in partnership with First PREMIER Bank, Black Hills State University (BHSU), the South Dakota Space Consortium, and the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority, immerses undergraduate students in STEM fields. Over the course of the summer, participants engage in hands-on research, learn from leading scientists, and travel to world-renowned labs, including Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois and Boulby Underground Laboratory in England.

For many students, the program marks a turning point in their educational journey. Brianna Mount, assistant professor of physics at Black Hills State University and logistics coordinator for the program, highlights its importance during this critical stage. “Participants are exploring their career paths and gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to work in science, engineering, and other STEM fields,” she said. “It’s an experience that often shapes their professional trajectories.”

Since its inception, the program has created a lasting legacy, equipping students with the knowledge and networks to thrive in STEM careers. Deb Wolf, Director of Outreach and Culture at SURF, highlights how the program fosters connections. “Students learn from experts across disciplines and gain a broader perspective that enriches their personal and professional growth,” she said.

As we prepare to welcome the 2025 cohort of scholars, First PREMIER Bank's renewed pledge ensures the program's continued growth and impact. This commitment serves as an inspiring example of how corporate philanthropy can transform lives and strengthen communities.

The SURF Foundation invites other organizations and individuals to join in supporting this initiative. Together, we can expand opportunities for young people to discover their potential and contribute to a better future through STEM.
