SURF and community partners raise $8000 for Foundation for Health in October
Employees at Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) raised $8,000 during October’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraiser.
South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) employees at Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) raised $8,000 during October’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraiser in support of the Foundation for Health in the Northern Black Hills. The organization offers financial assistance to individuals and families who have needs that accompany a cancer diagnosis. The mission of Foundation for Health, is to raise funds and receive contributions to promote and support the health and safety needs of our community through individuals, groups and health entities, to enhance well-being.
Laurie Wince, director of Foundation for Health, accepted a check at SURF. “I can’t thank everyone enough for this donation,” said Wince. “Every donation counts, and the annual funds coming in from the SURF fundraiser are helping grow a foundation that is allowing us to look at efforts to expand the help we can offer families struggling in a battle against cancer.”
Wince says breast cancer impacts an entire family, especially when children are involved. “There are so many young families in our community who are struggling with this,” Wince said. “Many think of cancer as only impacting older generations, it’s shocking how many young people need help in this battle.”
The final tally for SURF’s annual fundraiser was thanks to contributions from multiple individuals at SURF. The annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month Fundraiser is organized by SURF’s Well-Being Team. This year, the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) offered matching funds for individual donations that came in from staff members.
“For more than seven years, SDSTA efforts have been coordinated by our Well-Being Team and they have done an amazing job,” said Terry Miller, Chief Financial Officer at SURF. “SDSTA employees have exceeded the annual fundraising goal set by the Well-Being Team every year. We are all proud to support the Foundation for Health and our friends and neighbors who are struggling with cancer in our community.”
In total, SURF’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraisers have brought in more than $42,560 for the Foundation for Health over the past seven years.
